About Bowie, MD

Bowie is a city in Prince George’s County, Maryland. According to the 2020 census, its population was 58,329. Bowie has grown from a small railroad stop to the largest municipality in Prince George’s County, the fifth most populous city, and the third largest city by area in the U.S. state of Maryland. In 2014, CNN Money ranked Bowie 28th in its Best Places to Live in the United States list.

Bowie’s roots trace back to the railway boom of the 19th century. In 1853, Colonel William Duckett Bowie secured a charter to build a rail line into Southern Maryland. By 1872, the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad connected Baltimore, Southern Maryland, and Washington, D.C., transforming the region. Initially named Huntington City in 1870, the settlement was renamed Bowie in 1880 to honor Colonel Bowie’s son, Oden Bowie, a former Maryland governor and president of the railroad. Early development included over 500 residential lots to create a large town site at a junction of the Baltimore and Potomac’s main line to southern Maryland and the branch line to Washington, D.C.

Spanning 16 square miles, Bowie offers ample space for its vibrant community. With nearly 2,000 acres dedicated to parks and open spaces, the city features 72 ball fields, three community centers, and an ice arena at Allen Pond Park. Residents and visitors alike enjoy shopping at Bowie Town Center, performances at the 800-seat Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, and productions at a 150-seat theatrical playhouse. The city also boasts a golf course and three museums, blending recreation, culture, and history into one dynamic community.
